What does it mean if two batches show identical chromatograms?

⚡ Short answer

Two real HPLC runs are never exactly identical. If chromatograms for different batches match perfectly, with the same small peaks, the same background noise and the same timings, the report has almost certainly been copied or edited.

Why real runs always differ

Each HPLC run is a physical measurement. The time a peak appears drifts slightly with the column, the temperature and the solvent mix. The wavy background line, called baseline noise, is random. And small impurity peaks vary from batch to batch, because no two syntheses are exactly the same.

So two runs of the same compound by the same method should look similar, with the main peak at about the same time. What should never happen is a perfect match.

Signs of a copied report

The background noise has exactly the same wiggles.
The same small impurity peaks appear, with the same sizes.
Peak times match to the last decimal across reports months apart.
Only the batch number and date are different.
Text in those fields looks different from the rest: another font, size or alignment.

What to do

Ask the supplier for the lab's report number, then contact the lab directly and ask whether it issued that report for that sample. A genuine supplier will not mind you checking.
