What is SS-31?

⚡ Short answer

SS-31 is a synthetic 4-amino-acid peptide also known as elamipretide. In September 2025 the FDA gave elamipretide (brand name Forzinity) accelerated approval for Barth syndrome, but "SS-31" sold online as a research chemical is not that licensed medicine.

The structure

"SS" comes from Szeto-Schiller, the researchers who designed this family of peptides. SS-31 is four amino acids long and includes two unusual building blocks: a D-arginine (the mirror-image form of arginine) and Dmt, a modified tyrosine.

Those unusual parts make it harder for the body's enzymes to break down than a peptide made only of natural amino acids.

A research chemical and a licensed medicine

Under the name elamipretide, it was developed by Stealth BioTherapeutics. On 19 September 2025 the FDA granted it accelerated approval, as Forzinity, for Barth syndrome, a rare genetic condition. It is the first approved treatment for that condition, and the approval requires a further confirmatory trial.

That approval covers the licensed, prescription product made to pharmaceutical standards. Material sold online as "SS-31" for research is not that product and is not approved for any use. It is not approved in the UK or EU.
