What is Semax?

⚡ Short answer

Semax is a synthetic peptide of 7 amino acids (MEHFPGP), built from a fragment of the hormone ACTH with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added. It was developed in Russia and is registered there, but it is not an approved medicine in the UK, EU or US.

Where the sequence comes from

ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is a natural 39-amino-acid hormone. Semax takes the short fragment Met-Glu-His-Phe from it and adds Pro-Gly-Pro to the end, giving the seven-amino-acid sequence MEHFPGP.

Short peptides break down quickly. The Pro-Gly-Pro tail was added to make the fragment more resistant to the enzymes that cut peptides apart.

Regulatory status

Semax was developed by Russian scientists and is a registered medicine in Russia, where it is on the government's list of vital and essential drugs. It has not been approved in the UK, the EU or the US, so anything sold under the name there is a research chemical, not a medicine.

Compound profiles

How it is identified

A mass spectrometry report should show a mass matching 813.9 g/mol, and HPLC should show the purity. Because it contains methionine (the "M"), Semax can oxidise in storage, which shows up as an extra peak about 16 mass units heavier.
